Nuttall was a sharp-shooting guard for the Red Dragons in the early 1960’s. Fifty years later, Nuttall’s free throw percentage of 86.3 (120-139) in 1962-63 is till the single season record for the men’s basketball program. His career free throw mark of 82.7 is still third all-time for men’s basketball. What makes his feat more remarkable is that Nuttall lost the site in his left eye when he was eight years old.
Nuttall recounted his pursuit of perfection at the line, “In my senior year of high school I missed two free throws that cost my team the game. It was the worst feeling I ever had. I vowed that would not happen again. I changed my technique and shot 200 free throws a day for the next two years – once making 93 straight – to assure I would not miss another clutch free throw.”
Nuttall spent his entire professional career in education, beginning in 1966 as a mathematics teacher in Niskayuna. Nuttall relocated to Virginia where he spent the final thirty years in education in various capacities. Nuttall has been honored and has received numerous awards for his exemplary service and leadership in the Fairfax County Public Schools.
