Smith has the distinction of being the first female head athletic trainer for the athletics department, a position she took in 1979.  In addition to being the head athletic trainer, Smith was an Assistant Professor in the Physical Education Department where she officially retired from SUNY in January of 2009.  Throughout her 30 years as an employee, she served many organizations regionally and nationally including being a trainer for the 1990 US Rowing Association at the World Rowing Championships in Sydney and Tazmania.

Smith earned a certificate in Orthotics from Northwestern University in 1986 and used her expertise as a Certified Orthotist for nearly 30 years.  She started at Otsego Orthopedics in 1988 and stayed with the company through a few changes in ownership before finishing with the Center for Orthotics and Prosthetics in 2017.  She also worked with the late Dr. Jim Elting from 1992-2012.

Smith took three different trips to Ireland to teach sports medicine clinics and Gaelic sports.  She spent 20 years working summer camps in the area and was a part of the “Dream Camp” hosted by the National Baseball Hall of Fame.  She currently serves as a board member of the EDD Memorial Fund, which creates adaptive sports opportunities for individuals with disabilities.
