Bears is Oneonta's first National Champion.  During his four years as an outstanding swimmer for the College, he was a three-time All-American and, in 1967, was the NCAA national champion in the 200-yard butterfly.  Bears, who grew up in Carthage, N.Y., served as co-captain all four years while never losing a race in New York State swimming competitions.  At the 1967 nationals he established records for both the 100 and 200 butterfly events.  His career culminated with his selection as the College's Outstanding Male Athlete in 1967.

Upon graduation from Oneonta with a degree in elementary education, Bears spent eight years as a science teacher in New Lebanon, Mass. where he also served as the High School's swimming & diving coach.  During that time he worked towards a master's of education degree which he received in 1973 from North Adams (MA) State College.  Bears currently resides in Stephentown, N.Y. and has been involved in the construction business for the last 24 years.
