McMullen was a four-year standout for the Red Dragon nine.  He was the ace of the staff and compiled a 14-7 record during his four seasons with the baseball team.  McMullen was an All-SUNYAC selection at the end of the 1967 and 1969 seasons and pitched Oneonta to the conference title in '68 and '69 with two four-hitters.  He was team co-captain during his final two seasons with an individual highlight of throwing a no-hitter against Plattsburgh in 1968.

Former coach Don Axtell had this to say, "Steve had a winning attitude and was a tremendous leader for the baseball program.  Everyone who played with Steve was made a champion by his never-say-die attitude."

McMullen spent his formative years as a student in the Oneonta Public School system before he moved to Sidney, N.Y. to attend high school.  He received both his bachelor's and master's degrees in education from Oneonta and spent 1969 as a player for the Oneonta Yankees of the N.Y.-Penn League, a year in which they won the title.  Since that time he has settled into teaching 4th grade at Greene Central School in Greene, N.Y. while also coaching varsity-level tennis, basketball and baseball.
