Hall of Fame
McCarthy was the first great point guard for the men’s basketball program and was referred to by the late G.Hal Chase as “the most valuable player on the floor.” He played semi-pro basketball in the Buffalo area for three years before entering Oneonta State.
During his career with the Red Dragons he was the leading assists man and, by the end, was the player who would take the shot when the game was on the line. He returned to the Buffalo area where he taught and coached at N. Tonawanda High before returning to the college where he retired after a long tenure as an instructor and supervisor.
