The 1972 men's soccer team compiled a 16-2-1 overall record and captured the New York Regional championship en route to the NCAA Small College championship game.  Oneonta's run in the NCAA tournament began with a four-overtime game with Adelphi that ended deadlocked 1-1.  Four days later the Red Dragons traveled back to Adelphi and defeated them 6-0 to set up an inner-city match with Hartwick.  In that game Oneonta kept it rolling with a 3-0 victory at Damaschke Field.

In the regional final Oneonta defeated Springfield College 2-1 to advance to the national semifinals.  A 6-0 win over Chico State set up a title match with host Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville.  Unfortunately, the Red Dragons weren't able to finish the journey as they were upended in the championship game 1-0.

Four players from the 1972 team are already in the Hall of Fame and include Joe Howarth, Farrukh Quraishi, Altamont McKenzie and Desmond Monroe.  Twelve former players along with former coach Garth Stam, who was at the helm during the 1972 season, are in the Hall of Fame.
