Jim Dever set the pace for the future of cross country and track & field during his four years at the College. He was nearly unbeatable in the sport of cross country, winning 46 of 50 dual races in his career. In 1968 he won the New York State Cross Country Championships and placed 20th at the NCAA Cross Country Nationals. In track he was the SUNYAC champion in both the 1-mile and 2-mile races in 1968.
