Perez was a four year player for the men's soccer program. He was a starter for the 1972 team that played for the NCAA Division II Championship. He played in 48 career games and registered two goals and four assists.
 
After graduation, Perez has spent his entire professional career involved in the game of soccer at every level.
 
Beginning in 1978, Perez worked as U.S. National Staff Coach, helping the U.S. Team qualify for the World Cup for the first time in 40 years in 1990.  He also led the 1989 World Cup under-20 team to a fourth-place finish, boasting the best results for that team in program history.  From 1996 through 2003, he worked as an assistant coach for the Los Angeles Galaxy and New York-New Jersey Metrostars of Major League Soccer, prior to serving as the Director of Coaching and Youth Development from 2003-2005.
 
After beginning his collegiate coaching career at Division III Whittier College in 1974, Perez has enjoyed head coaching stints at Division I Old Dominion University (VA), Santa Clara University and Cal State Fullerton, along with stops at Division II Cal State San Bernardino (women’s) and Cal State Los Angeles.  He is currently the head coach at Redlands University where he has been since 2006.
 
During his tenure at ODU, Perez led the Monarchs to their first and only Colonial Athletic Association Championship in 1991 garnering South Atlantic Region Coach of the Year honors. He helped establish the CSU San Bernardino women’s soccer program in 1988 by serving as the team’s first head coach. While at Santa Clara, Perez was named Far West Coach of the Year in 1983.  During his 11 seasons at Redlands, he has guided the team to six NCAA Championship appearances, including an Elite 8 finish in 2007 and 2016, and a Sweet-16 finish in 2011.  This three-time National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) West Region Coach of the Year (2011, 2015, and 2016) has coached six SCIAC Players of the Year.
 
In 2012, Perez received the Walt Chyzowych Memorial Fund Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.  The Award is given annually to recognize and give thanks for a person’s lifetime of dedication to preserving the spirit of the game of soccer, advancing its level of play and promoting its growth and development among youth and adults nationwide.
