Hall of Fame
Coon was a standout performer for the men’s basketball program for four years, three of which were as a member of the varsity team. Back during his time freshmen were not allowed to play at the varsity level. Coon was one of the first recruits for Coach Don Flewelling and helped lead the team to its first post-season tournament in the program’s history in 1975. That year the squad was chosen to participate in the ECAC tournament.
Coon averaged double figures in scoring for his three years as a varsity player while scoring a total of 700 points. He was team co-captain in his senior year when the team completed a 16-10 season including an 8-3 mark in the SUNYAC. By all accounts, Coon was an excellent shooter who was known for his defense.
Coon, a native of Binghamton, N.Y., graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education. He attained a master’s degree in secondary social studies in 1980 from Oneonta before receiving two certificates of advanced study from Manhattan College and SUNY Cortland.
