Harrington was a two-sport athlete in the sports of basketball and baseball during his days at Oneonta from 1955-59. He was considered one of the top athletes of the late 1950’s at Oneonta having played four years of varsity basketball and three years of varsity baseball. Known as a “deadly” outside shooter, he helped lead his basketball teams to winning records in each of his four seasons. During his final season, he was a team captain and led the team in scoring, averaging 16 points per-game. In 1959 he was selected to the SUNY Invitational All-Tournament Team becoming the first player to be selected from Oneonta.
In the sport of baseball Harrington excelled as a southpaw pitcher and first baseman. He helped lead the baseball program to three winning seasons that included only three loses during that time. Harrington finished his career with a 13-2 record on the mound while hitting .368 as a senior. He averaged 10 strike-outs per-game for his career and, during his sophomore season, struck out a career best 16 against Broome Tech.
Harrington spent his entire professional career in education as a teacher, administrator and finally the superintendent of the Harborfields Central School District on Long Island until his retirement in 1999. He currently is self-employed as a human resources consultant on the island.
