Barbuto was a standout wrestler for four years and was member of the first wrestling team in 1960. Barbuto has the distinction of being the first individual NYSIAC champion, which was the precursor to the SUNYAC. He won back-to-back conference titles in 1961 and 1962 at 123 lbs. He served as the team captain all four years and was the team’s MVP in 1963. During his career he amassed a 35-7-5 record that included an 11-0-2 record during the 1961-62 season.
After graduating with an education degree in 1964, Barbuto taught science for the Middle County Central School District in Centereach, N.Y. for 33 years until his retirement in 1997. During his tenure in education he coached 90 teams at the junior high and middle school level in the sports of cross country, wrestling and track & field. Still active as a varsity high school wrestling official for Suffolk County, Barbuto has three more years to reach the milestone of 50 years as an official.
As an alumnus of the wrestling program, Barbuto has wrestled in 19 alumni meets including 1992 where he wrestled at the age of 50. In 2010, he was named to the Golden Anniversary Team, which celebrated the greatest wrestlers during the first 50 years of the program at Oneonta.
