Magrin was two-sport athlete for Oneonta from 1965-1969 and made his mark in the sport of baseball.  Magrin was considered to be the “big game” guy when it came to who would draw the pitching assignment against the big schools in the region.  Magrin finished his career with an 11-5 record and 116 strikeouts while also driving in 42 runs.  He was a three-time All-SUNYAC selection and led the conference in earned run average in 1968 when he was a First Team pitcher.

After graduating from Oneonta in the spring of 1969, Magrin became a reporter for the Oneonta Daily Star where he spent five years as a sports reporter and editor.  In 1975 he headed south to Florida and began working as a reporter for the Sarasota Herald-Tribune.

He retired in 1999 from the Gainesville Sun where, in 1988, he and other reporters won the Society of Professional Journalists' Green Shade Award for investigative reporting.  They were selected for their reporting during the NCAA investigations of the University of Florida athletics program.
