Downs was a four-year member of the men's soccer team from 1974-1977.  During his career the team earned two NCAA berths and won an ECAC championship.  He was a three- time All-SUNYAC and two-time All-New York State selection.  Downs started 56 of 57 career games played and totaled 42 points on nine goals and 24 assists.  He was chosen by Soccer Monthly Magazine as an All-American at the conclusion of his senior year.

Downs was drafted in 1978 by the New York Eagles of the American Soccer League and played for the Las Vegas Seagulls of the ASL in 1979.  Since 1979 he has played and coached soccer teams in and around New York City and presently is the coach of the New York Athletic Club of the Cosmopolitan League.  His team has won six Division I titles and has made one trip to the Final Four of National Cup.

Downs, who earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Economics from Oneonta, has spent his entire professional life as a restaurant & bar owner in Manhattan.
