Green excelled in the sport of basketball for Oneonta State after transferring in as a sophomore. In his three years with the program, and as a small center that was asked to guard much bigger players, he was the team's leading once and the leading rebounder twice. The other two seasons that he was not the leading scorer he was second.
After graduation Green taught elementary school from 1955-59, middle school science from 1959-85 and served as a high school science teacher and principle from 1985-92. He completed a master's degree from the University of Vermont in 1995 where he served as an adjunct professor from 1992-95.
Green was a football official and baseball umpire for forty years and, in 2000, was inducted into the National Football Foundation Hall of Fame.
