OSWEGO, N.Y.-- Senior
Morgan Fleming (Harpursville, N.Y./Harpursville) scored three minutes into double overtime to lift the SUNY Oneonta field hockey team over Oswego State in the conference opener, 2-1 Saturday afternoon. The Red Dragons moved to 3-5 in the season and 1-0 in the SUNYAC while the Lakers dropped to 6-4 overall and 0-2 in the conference.
Â
Following a quiet first quarter, Oswego controlled possession for most of the second. The Lakers had multiple corner opportunities in the quarter but came up empty in each one. Â
Bryleigh Beauchat got Oswego on the board three minutes into the second half. Kate McNally brought the ball up to the top of the Lakers' offensive arc and took a shot that was kick saved away by senior
Jennifer Tumino (Carle Place, N.Y./Carle Place). Beauchat got the rebound and after having her first shot blocked, she beat Tumino on the second shot. Â
The Red Dragons were only down for a couple minutes until senior
Carly Waszczak (Northport, N.Y./Northport) tied it up. After a penalty corner, junior
Erin Clark (Somers, N.Y./Somers) hit the ball into the arc and forced Laker's goalie Erica Scheblein to come out of the net. Scheblein attempted to kick the ball out of the zone but missed and set up Waszczak to take a shot in front of the net, beating two Laker defenders. Â
After tying the game, the tides started to turn in favor for Oneonta. Halfway through the fourth quarter the Red Dragons had an opportunity to take the lead when Clark and junior
Madeline Acevedo (Holland Patent, N.Y./Holland Patent) took back-to-back shots on goal but were stopped by Scheblein, and the game went into overtime. Â
In the first overtime period Oneonta kept their foot on the gas and outshot Oswego 6-2 and in the second overtime Fleming beat Scheblein. Junior
Michaela Maniscalco (Northport, N.Y./Northport) received the ball at midfield and had Fleming with her for a two-on-two. Maniscalco led a pass to Fleming in the arc, past the two Laker defenders, for a one-on-one against Scheblein where Fleming dribbled right by her as Scheblein was trying to kick slide the ball away.Â
Tumino finished the contest with four saves while Scheblein ended with nine.Â
Oneonta outshot Oswego 11-3 in the fourth quarter and overtime, 13-11 overall. The Lakers had the advantage on penalty corners, 13-5.Â
The Red Dragons are back in action Tuesday on the road against Morrisville at 7 pm.Â
