MORRISVILLE, N.Y.-- Senior
Carly Waszczak (Northport, N.Y./Northport) recorded a hat trick in the SUNY Oneonta field hockey team's 4-0 conference road victory over Morrisville, Tuesday evening. Waszczak's hat trick is the first in the program's history since October 13, 2018. Following the result, the Red Dragons improved to 4-5 overall and 2-0 in the SUNYAC and the Mustangs fell to 3-4 in the season and 0-2 in the conference.
Most of the contest took place in Oneonta's attacking zone, allowing them to fire off 48 shots and generate 30 penalty corners, while holding Morrisville to zero shot attempts and only two penalty corners.
The Red Dragons grabbed the lead nine minutes into the first quarter after being awarded a 25-yard hit. Senior
Sophia Little (Northport, N.Y./Northport) hit the ball into the arc that eventually found junior
Michaela Maniscalco (Northport, N.Y./Northport). Maniscalco dribbled in and took a shot on net that was kick saved away to junior
Madeline Acevedo (Holland Patent, N.Y./Holland Patent) who fired the rebound into the left side of the cage for her second goal of the season.
A couple minutes into the third period, Oneonta made it a two-goal lead. Waszczak pushed out a penalty corner to Little who dished it to senior
Claire Mahoney (Pearl River, N.Y./Pearl River). Mahoney did not get a clean shot off, so junior
Carly O'Connor (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Walter Panas) gave it a backhand push that was defensively saved by Emily Plett. Waszczak got the rebound and took two shots, the first was defensively saved again by Plett and the second went over Plett's shoulder for the score.
Waszczak scored her fifth and sixth goals of the season in the final period. The first came off a penalty stroke three minutes into the period. The second came after she received the ball in the arc from junior
Erin Clark (Somers, N.Y./Somers) and lifted the ball into the cage while junior
Molly Geyer (West Nyack, N.Y./Clarkstown South) shielded the goalie from seeing the shot.
Senior
Jennifer Tumino (Carle Place, N.Y./Carle Place) saw the first 45 minutes of action and freshman
Chelsea Dodenhoff (Islip Terrace, N.Y./East Islip) played the final 15. Morrisville's Morgan Dueber finished with 21 saves.
The Red Dragons are back in action Sunday as they travel to face Nazareth at 2 pm.
