ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Four different Red Dragons found the back of the cage as the SUNY Oneonta field hockey team defeated Nazareth College, 4-2, Sunday afternoon. Senior
Claire Mahoney (Pearl River, N.Y./Pearl River) posted a goal and an assist as the Red Dragons improved to 5-5 overall while the Golden Flyers dropped to 2-11.
Senior
Jennifer Tumino (Carle Place, N.Y./Carle Place) kicked off the game with two back-to-back saves against Bailey Selman. Later in the period, Oneonta got one on the board off the stick of junior
Michaela Maniscalco (Northport, N.Y./Northport). After Maniscalco's first shot was saved, senior
Morgan Fleming (Harpursville, N.Y./Harpursville) took a shot that was defensively saved by a Nazareth defender. The defender tried to clear it, but Maniscalco stopped the ball and fired it into the cage.
The Red Dragons extended their lead three minutes into the second period when Mahoney drove the ball towards the cage from the baseline and found Fleming behind the Golden Flyers keeper, Mackenzie Halliday, for a redirect goal.
Misfortune struck for Oneonta halfway through the second period when Grace Wasileski took a shot from the top of the arc that initially looked like it was going wide but was redirected off a Red Dragon defender's stick and into the cage. Just before halftime, senior
Sophia Little (Northport, N.Y./Northport) put the game out of reach with a penalty stroke goal.
Mahoney added an insurance goal with 10 minutes remaining. Off a penalty corner, junior
Erin Clark (Somers, N.Y./Somers) got the ball at the top of the arc and attempted to pass it inside to Fleming. Halliday came out of the cage to kick the pass away and kicked it directly towards Mahoney who drilled the backside of the cage.
Tumino finished the game with four saves and Halliday ended with 12 saves.
The Red Dragons outshot the Golden Flyers 24-7 and had a 14-7 advantage on penalty corners.
Oneonta is back in action on Wednesday as they host the Red Dragon rival Cortland at 5 pm.
