SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - The Oneonta field hockey team fell short on the road against Skidmore, Wednesday afternoon. Skidmore held a two-goal lead ending the first quarter and added two more in the fourth. The Red Dragons played a defensive heavy game, while not being able to capitalize on chances offensively. They move to 5-5 on the season and Skidmore to 5-6.
"Surface changes are tough in hockey and we struggled adjusting right away, but then we settled in and did some good things," said Head Coach
Kelly Kingsbury. "We had some opportunities but couldn't quite capitalize."
Skidmore recorded their first goal of the day early in the game at 0:39. Gianna DiGloacchino found the back of the net off a behind back pass from Erin Ohlenbusch to give the Thoroughbreds the lead. Skidmore's Emma Houff scored to end the first quarter with a 2-0 advantage.
The Red Dragons began to see opportunities in the second quarter with junior
Miranda Colacchio (Lagrange, N.Y./Arlington) recording a shot on goal saved by Skidmore's goalie, Allison Moragan. Oneonta drew two penalty corners in the second quarter with senior
Abigail Draper (Remsen, NY/Holland Patent) getting a shot on the net blocked.
The Red Dragons had a defensive heavy third quarter. Freshmen
Eva Klessel (Bronxville, NY/Bronxville) made three saves in under two minutes to keep the Thoroughbreds to a 2-0 lead going into the fourth quarter.
Skidmore found the net two more times in the fourth quarter despite Oneonta's defensive efforts.
Skidmore outshot Oneonta 28-5. Colacchio ended the game with two shots on goal, while Klessel recorded nine saves, a season high. Klessel is ranked 16th for save percentage in the country for D3 currently.
The Red Dragons are on the road again on Sunday, October 11, to face No. 4 nationally ranked Salisbury at 11 am.
