ONEONTA, N.Y. -- In a tightly contest non-conference match, the Oneonta field hockey team dropped to St. John Fisher, 2-0, Saturday afternoon at All College Field. St. John Fisher held a one-goal lead heading into halftime, then they added the second in the final minute of play. The Red Dragons had several chances in the offensive zone but could not get the ball to bounce their way, as they moved to 1-1 on the season and the Cardinals improved to 1-2 overall.
St. John Fisher recorded their first goal at 19:48 in the second period. Avery McLaughlin brought the ball into the shooting circle then gave a backhanded pass to Callie Smith, who redirected the ball into the cage.
With just under a minute remaining in the match, the Cardinals scored their second for the 2-0 final. On the counterattack, McLaughlin brought the ball from midfield into the circle and shot the ball low into the right side of the cage.
Oneonta's handful of moments to hit the cage happened throughout the match. In the first period, the Red Dragons strung together three penalty corners but got stymied each time. Just before the first goal, senior
Alexandra Howell (Holtsville, N.Y./Sachem East) got the ball on a penalty corner and fired in a shot that was saved by the Cardinals' keeper. In the final minutes of play, freshman
Gaby Ackley (Windsor, NY/Windsor Central) and junior
Miranda Colacchio (Lagrange, N.Y./Arlington) both got a shot on the cage, however each shot was saved.

Sarah Stadelmann (East Syracuse, N.Y./East Syracuse Minoa) each recorded a defensive save. Howell and junior
Nora Trimarchi (South Glens Falls, N.Y./South Glens Falls) both totaled two shots on goal.
Oneonta had a 7-5 advantage in penalty corners, while St. John Fisher finished with a 10-8 margin in shots on goal. Morgan Parrinello ended the game with seven saves for the Cardinals, and McLauglin had a goal and an assist.
The Red Dragons return to action on Wednesday, September 9, for the Battle of the Hills at Hartwick at 4 pm.
