Women's lacrosse advances past Brockport in SUNYAC first round

Red Dragons face No. 1 SUNY Cortland Friday

Box Score The SUNY Oneonta women's lacrosse team jumped out to a 7-2 first-half lead today en route to a 13-9 victory over Brockport in the opening game of the 2014 SUNYAC tournament.  The victory pushes the Red Dragons into the semifinals this Friday at 12:30pm against rival SUNY Cortland.  The win, which was Oneonta's 12th of the season, also tied the single season record for victories set two years ago.

"I am very proud of these girls for what they have accomplished so far this season and for beating a very talented Brockport team," said head coach Ali Pollock.  "They are committed, focused and we are playing our best lacrosse right now.  We've been knocked around a couple of times this season and this team has been able to learn from it, showing so much character."

After a goal by Brockport (10-7) senior Emily Zartman tied the game at 2-2 in the 13th minute, it was all Oneonta (12-6), as they closed the opening half of play with five unanswered goals to seize the momentum.  Sophomore Catherine Clark (Burnt Hills/Burnt Hills) and junior Kiera McNally (East Northport/Northport) each scored three goals in the first half to lead the attack.

The three goals for McNally were her 50th, 51st and 52nd of the season, which marks the second straight season that she has eclipsed 50 goals.

Oneonta built its lead to 13-6 with less than two minutes to play in the game before Brockport scored three straight for the final.

Clark finished the game with four goals to lead the Red Dragons.  McNally had the three goals and junior Nikki Fioretti (Yorktown Heights/Yorktown) and senior Casey Sarle (West Islip/West Islip) added two goals each.

Sophomore Amanda Reichardt (Kings Park/Kings Park) made five saves in goal for Oneonta as she picked up her 12th win of the year, which ties the single season record for wins by a goalie.

Zartman led the Golden Eagles with four goals.

Pollock concluded, "We are excited to be moving on in such a competitive conference and we are looking forward to the challenge of playing the No. 1 team in the country on Friday."
