ONEONTA, N.Y. - The Oneonta women's lacrosse team earned its first SUNYAC playoff win since 2022 with a 16-10 win over Fredonia on Saturday afternoon. The Red Dragons move to 11-5 overall, while the Blue Devils finish the season at 9-10.
Oneonta controlled the first quarter, opening on a 6-0 run. Senior Lindsey Townes (Yorktown Heights, NY/Yorktown) scored off an assist from senior Grace Beattie (Windsor, NY/Windsor), and then freshman Ava Fitzsimons (Pearl River, NY/Pearl River) scored at 11:34. Three straight goals by freshman Emily McIntee (East Islip, NY/East Islip) pushed the lead to five, and a score from sophomore Angelina Weinert (Levittown, NY/Division Avenue) made it 6-0. Fredonia scored at 5:53 from Katie O'Brien to get on the board. Beattie scored at 3:24 to push the Oneonta advantage to 7-1, and a save from junior goalie Margot Haring (Doylestown, PA/Central Bucks) at 0:55 kept the Blue Devils to one goal in the first quarter.
Fredonia scored two quick goals to start the second quarter from Megan Karalus and O'Brien to make it 7-3. Townes responded with a goal at 11:49, and senior Chelsea Dodenhoff (Islip Terrace, NY/East Islip) netted a free-position score at 10:11 to push ahead 9-3. The Blue Devils added two more before halftime to cut the lead to four goals.
Fredonia made it a one-score game in the third with three consecutive goals coming from O'Brien. After a Haring save at 4:52, McIntee scored to make it 10-8. Fitzsimons found the back of the net on a woman-up opportunity, and a late goal by freshman Madison DeAngelis (Hamilton, NY/Hamilton Central) pushed the Red Dragons up 12-8.
Back-to-back goals from McIntee and Beattie gave Oneonta a 14-8 lead at 9:25. Karalus answered with a goal at 7:41, but scores from Weinert and DeAngelis gave Oneonta enough of a late lead.
Three Red Dragons had five points, with McIntee scoring five goals. Fitzsimons and Townes each had two goals and three assists. Freshman Isabella O'Leary (Ballston Spa, NY/Ballston Spa) had five draw controls.
O'Brien led Fredonia with six goals, while Karalus had two. Noelle Mendez had three caused turnovers and four groundballs.
Haring finished with ten saves in goal, and Fredonia's Jessica Kowalski made nine stops.
Oneonta next travels to face top-seeded Oswego in the SUNYAC Semifinals on Wednesday, April 29, at 4 p.m.
