Second half explosion leads women's lacrosse past New Paltz

Box Score The SUNY Oneonta women's lacrosse team had to wait one day, but the wait was worth it, as they defeated SUNY New Paltz 23-14.  The Red Dragons scored 14 goals in the second half, as they ran away from the Hawks to lift its record to 9-5 overall and 4-2 in the SUNYAC.  The Hawks fall to 4-6 overall and 1-4 in conference play.

Offensively, junior Kiera McNally (East Northport/Northport) and senior Chelsea Collins (St. James/Smithtown East) each collected seven points in the contest.  McNally tallied six goals and one assist while Collins registered three goals and four assists.  Junior Nicole Boylan (Massapequa/Massapequa) added two goals and four assists for six points in the game.  In all, eight Oneonta players had at least two goals in the game.

With her four assists, Collins broke the program single season mark of 35, set last year by Caroline Tulley (Malverne/Sacred Heart Academy).  Collins now has a team best 38 assists this season and has 46 points, which is second on the team.

Oneonta jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the first nine minutes of the game today, as McNally tallied her first two goals.

The Hawks made a couple of runs in the first half and got to within a pair of goals three times at 6-4, 7-5 and 8-6.  A free position goal by junior Michelle Genovese (West Islip/West Islip) with 35 seconds to go in the opening half gave Oneonta a 9-6 lead at halftime.

Oneonta held a 13-10 lead 10 minutes into the second half when they started pulling away from the Hawks.  The Red Dragons put the game out of reach with seven of the next eight goals over an 11-minute span, capped by a goal by freshman Moriah Excell (Waterloo/Waterloo) off an assist by McNally.

Sophomore Amanda Reichardt (Kings Park/Kings Park) and senior Laura Grose (Yorktown Heights/Yorktown) split the game in half today in goal for Oneonta.  Reichardt picked up the win as the starter, as she made two saves while Grose made five stops in the second half.
