The SUNY Oneonta field hockey team will host New Paltz on Wednesday in the semifinals of the 2014 SUNYAC field hockey tournament. The Red Dragons earned the No. 2 seed for this year's tournament and will host third-seeded New Paltz beginning at 3pm.
Â
Admission is $6 for adults, $3 for children 6-12, free for children five and under and any SUNY student who has a valid ID.
Â
Since the SUNYAC began playing a conference tournament in 2010, this will be Oneonta's fourth straight appearance. In their three previous appearances, the Red Dragons have advanced to the championship game once, and that was in 2011. That year Oneonta fell in overtime to SUNY Cortland 2-1.
Â
"We are thrilled to be hosting the first round of SUNYACs this season," said head coach
Kelly Kingsbury. "We match up well with New Paltz and being able to play them again at home on our playing surface will be a huge advantage for us. There is no doubt in my mind that the team is ready for this game, it will be a great game on both ends."
Â
When the two squads locked up back on Oct. 15 Oneonta was outshot in the game, but the Red Dragons prevailed 2-0. Senior
Kelcy Forbragd (Camden/Camden) and junior
Hannah Hayward (Glens Falls/Glens Falls) each scored in the second half to lift Oneonta to the win. Senior
Tess Tracy (Liverpool/Liverpool) made six saves while junior Holly Van Dresar made two defensive saves.
Â
Wednesday's contest will be the third time that Oneonta and New Paltz will be meeting in the semifinals for the third time. The two have split the first two meetings, which came in 2011 and 2012. In 2011, Oneonta won 3-2 en route to the championship game while in 2012 New Paltz won 3-1 en route to winning the conference title.
Â
Oneonta will enter Wednesday's game 11-7 overall. They had a 5-1 record in conference play this season, which was its best regular season record in SUNYAC play all-time. The Red Dragons hold a 43-36 advantage in scoring this fall while earning 112 penalty corners.
Â
Senior
Andrea Day (Greene/Greene) and sophomore
Bailee Barrett (Camden/Camden) are 1-2 in scoring currently. Day has 37 points on 15 goals and a team-leading seven assists. Barrett has 30 points on 13 goals and four assists. The two along with Forbragd share for the lead with three game-winning goals each.
Â
Tracy has logged 984 minutes in 17 starts this fall in goal. She is 9-7 with a 2.06 goals against average while recording one shutout.
Â
The winner of Wednesday's game will play in the championship game schedule for Saturday, Nov. 8 at the highest remaining seed. The game is scheduled for a 1pm start.
