Women's lacrosse qualifies for SUNYAC tournament

Box Score The SUNY Oneonta women's lacrosse task was simple today.  Defeat Oswego on the road and you qualify for the SUNYAC tournament.  The Red Dragons did just that, as they pulled away in the second half en route to a 20-13 victory over the Lakers.  Oneonta (9-8/4-4 SUNYAC) will now travel to Brockport on Tuesday to play in the 4/5 game of the conference tournament beginning at 3pm.  The loss by Oswego (7-8/4-4 SUNYAC) eliminated them from the playoffs based on head-to-head with Oneonta.

This year the conference added one more team to the tournament bracket, so there is a first round game, with the winner advancing into the semifinals, which will be at SUNY Cortland beginning Friday, May 3.

Leading the way for the Red Dragons today was senior Caroline Tulley (Malverne/Sacred Heart Academy), who posted five goals and four assists.  The four assists on the day brought her season total to 34, which is a new single season record for the women's lacrosse program.  The assists also added to her program record for career assists, which currently stand at 74.

Back-to-back goals by Tulley got Oneonta off and running in the first half.  After a pair of goals by sophomore Jillian Donodeo (Holbrook/Sachem East), the Red Dragons led 4-1 just 13 minutes into the contest.

The Lakers ran off four unanswered goals over the next eight minutes to take a 5-4 lead.

Three straight goals by Oneonta including a pair on free position shots gave them the lead back at 7-5 with less than two minutes remaining in the opening half.  The Red Dragons conceded a goal in the final minute, but took its 7-6 lead into halftime.

Oswego scored the first goal of the second half to tie the game for the last time at 7-7.  It was all Oneonta from that point, as they ripped off four straight goals over a four-minute span to take the lead for good at 11-7.

Donodeo led all scorers in the game today with six goals.  Classmate Kiera McNally (East Northport/Northport) added four goals.

Junior goalie Laura Grose (Yorktown Heights/Yorktown) came up with five saves in the game to run her record to 6-5.
