Box Score The SUNY Oneonta women's lacrosse team closed out the home portion of its 2013 schedule tonight with a 16-12 loss to Scranton. The visitors jumped out to an 11-6 halftime lead and held off a late charge by the Red Dragons to improve to 8-5 overall this season.
After sophomore
Kiera McNally (East Northport/Northport) gave Oneonta a 1-0 lead 31 seconds into the contest, the Royals scored four unanswered goals over the next 10 minutes to take a 4-1 lead. Deanna Giorno scored a pair and assisted on a third goal to lead Scranton. Giorno led all players in the game with six goals and one assist for seven points.
The Red Dragons got as close as two goals twice during the opening half. They trailed 5-3 and 7-5 before Scranton opened up a comfortable lead going into halftime. Three of Oneonta's first half goals were scored on free position shots by
Casey Sarle (West Islip/West Islip),
Chelsea Collins (St. James/Smithtown East) and
Caroline Tulley (Malverne/Sacred Heart Academy).
Nicole Boylan (Massapequa/Massapequa), Collins and Tulley scored unanswered to start the second half to cut the Scranton lead back to a pair of goals at 11-9. A free position goal by sophomore
Nikki Fioretti (Yorktown Heights/Yorktown) got Oneonta back to 12-10, but that was as close as the Red Dragons would be for the remainder of the game.
Boylan and Tulley shared high point honors with four each. Boylan led the Red Dragons with three goals while Tulley, Collins and McNally each had two goals.
Oneonta (8-8) will travel to Oswego this Saturday to close out the regular season. The winner of the contest will qualify for the fifth and final spot in this year's SUNYAC tournament. The game is scheduled for a 1pm start.
