Box Score The milestones keep coming and the records keep falling for the Oneonta State women's lacrosse team, who went on the road and defeated SUNY Potsdam today 17-11. The win for the Red Dragons was its eighth consecutive victory to start the season, which is the best start to a season in the history of the program. On Saturday, they tied the 2003 squad with seven straight wins to begin the season, but today moved passed it to become the best ever. The win also moved them to 2-0 in the SUNYAC.
The team accomplishment was just one of the highlights in today's game as senior
Rebecca Monteith (West Islip/West Islip) became the program's all time leading scorer, surpassing Oneonta State Hall of Famer Susanne Murray Masi, before Monteith was even born a quarter century ago in 1987.
“I came to Oneonta never expecting to reach a milestone like this,” Monteith said via text message after the game. “I'm thrilled to have done this while we are 8-0, because the team success means more to me than my individual accomplishment. I couldn't have done this without the support of my teammates. This is only the beginning for us.”
Monteith lit it up for eight goals today while adding one assist for nine points. She now has 212 goals, breaking the Masi's mark of 209, while totaling 266 points to pass the old record of 264. The eight goals in today's game also tied her single game record, which she did twice during the 2010 season.
The Red Dragons, who received votes in this week's IWLCA Div. III Coaches Poll, actually trailed in today's contest 5-3 in the first half before scoring four unanswered in the final six minutes of the half to head into the break up 7-5. Monteith had a pair of scores while freshman
Kiera McNally (East Northport/Northport) and sophomore
Alexa Anzalone (Rocky Point/Rocky Point) added one goal each. Freshman
Jillian Donodeo (Holbrook/Sachem East) assisted on three of the four goals.
Junior
Caroline Tulley (Malverne/Sacred Heart Academy) scored in the first minute of the second half to give Oneonta a three-goal cushion. Potsdam battled back twice, but never got as close as two goals during the second half. Oneonta ran away from the Bears with four straight goals over a five-minute stretch to put the game out of reach at 16-10. After one final goal by the hosts, Monteith capped the scoring with less than four minutes remaining in the game for the final of 17-11.
Oneonta had a 19-11 advantage in the game in draw controls including a team high nine by Monteith. Classmate
Heidi Kissinger (East Islip/East Islip), who leads Div. III in draw controls at nearly nine per game, added five.
Senior
Annelise Muscietta (Lindenhurst/Walter O'Connell Copiague) and sophomore
Laura Grose (Yorktown Heights/Yorktown) combined for 10 saves in the game today. Muscietta picked up her eighth win of the season.
Oneonta will be on the road again this coming Saturday when they travel west to Fredonia for a SUNYAC contest beginning at 1pm.
