Box Score The Oneonta State women's lacrosse team played even with No. 2 SUNY Cortland for the first five minutes of today's contest before the rival Red Dragons asserted itself en route to winning 18-11. The loss for Oneonta (11-3/4-3 SUNYAC) puts them in a possible must win scenario this Saturday versus Brockport depending on how the Golden Eagles make out tomorrow against Buffalo State. Oneonta is battling for the final playoff spot with both Brockport and Buffalo State and SUNY Geneseo.
Oneonta put the game's first goal on the scoreboard as senior
Rebecca Monteith (West Islip/West Islip) scored on a free position shot just 19 seconds into the game. Monteith finished the game with four points on four goals to put her over 300 career points. Monteith is the first men or women's lacrosse player to eclipse the 300-point barrier.
Senior Lindsay Abbott tied the score 36 seconds later before Monteith scored again at the 2:11 mark to put Oneonta ahead for the last time in the game.
After a free position goal by junior Gina Campese tied the game at two goals apiece, classmate Maria Di Fato notched back-to-back goals within a minute to put Cortland ahead for good.
Cortland would run its lead to 12-4 at halftime, scoring seven of the final eight goals of the first half.
The visiting Red Dragons put the game away early in the second half with four consecutive goals to cap a run of eight unanswered.
Di Fato led Cortland with six goals and two assists. Abbott finished the contest with three goals and three assists to add to her 400-plus career points.
Oneonta converted 4-of-7 free position shots and had an 18-13 advantage in draw controls. Cortland held a 34-29 shot advantage while making good on 14-of-15 clear opportunities.
Oneonta will host Brockport this Saturday beginning at noon.
