Women's lacrosse moves to 7-0 with win vs. Buffalo State

Red Dragons match 2003 squad for best start to a season

Senior Rebecca Monteith became the second women's player to ever score 200 goals
Box Score The Oneonta State women's lacrosse team showed that they were no fools today as they defeated visiting Buffalo State 18-9 to remain undefeated on the season.  Oneonta (7-0/1-0 SUNYAC) never trailed in the game en route to equaling the program's best start ever to a season, matching the 7-0 start of the 2003 team.

Oneonta, which is amongst the NCAA Div. III leaders in scoring, was over its average of 17 goals per game today.  Leading the charge was senior Rebecca Monteith (West Islip/West Islip), who tallied six for the Red Dragons.  Her second goal 11:43 into the first half marked her 200th career goal, as she became only the second women's player to reach this milestone.  She is closing in on the career marks for both goals and points and should do so in one of the next two games, which will be on the road at Potsdam (Apr. 3) and Fredonia next Saturday.

The Red Dragons didn't waste any time in jumping out to a 2-0 lead in the first minute on goals by senior Heidi Kissinger (East Islip/East Islip) and Monteith.  Kissinger, who was 3rd in Div. III in draw controls per game, grabbed a team high seven draw controls in today's contest.  She also finished with three goals.

Buffalo State (7-3/0-1 SUNYAC) senior Karen Shaddock got the Bengals on the scoreboard at the 4:48 mark into the first half to make the score 2-1.  Shaddock, who is Buffalo State's leading scorer, registered three goals in the game to leave town with 45.  Classmate Kendyl Clarkson matched Shaddock's three scores while adding an assist to lead the Bengals with four points.

Oneonta scored three unanswered goals to push its early lead to 5-1.  Two of the scores were by junior Caroline Tulley (Malverne/Sacred Heart Academy), who finished the game with four goals and two assists.

Oneonta built a comfortable 11-6 lead by halftime, holding a 24-11 advantage in shots.  They also had a 13-5 advantage in draw controls in the half and finished with 20 draw controls for the game, which was above its season average of 19.  The Red Dragons entered today's game 2nd in Div. III in draw controls per game.

In the second half, Buffalo State would draw as close as 12-8 on a goal by Clarkson, before the Red Dragons slammed the door shut the rest of the way, outscoring the Bengals 6-1 for the final margin of victory.
