Women's lacrosse holds off Vassar for 14-13 win

Red Dragons off to a 2-0 start to season

Box Score The Oneonta State women's lacrosse team held off a late charge by the visiting Vassar Brewers today to pick up a 14-13 win at home.  Junior Caroline Tulley (Malverne/Sacred Heart Academy) had a huge game for the Red Dragons with a career high eight points on four goals and four assists to lead the attack.

Oneonta pushed its one-goal lead to 14-11 with just under six minutes to go in the contest.  Back-to-back goals by freshman Kiera McNally (East Northport/Northport) and Tulley gave the Red Dragons a three-goal advantage with 5:38 remaining.  McNally contributed three goals today for Oneonta.

Vassar (2-2) didn't go quietly as they scored a pair to cut the Oneonta (2-0) lead to just a single goal at 14-13.  Sophomore Malena Harrang scored unassisted just 29 seconds after Tulley's goal.  Classmate Emma Carter brought the Brewers one goal closer with an assist from junior Marissa Reilly with just 1:02 to go in the game.

Oneonta senior Heidi Kissinger (East Islip/East Islip) won the ensuing draw control and Oneonta was able to control the ball and kill the remaining time to hold on to the win.  In the game, the Red Dragons held a decided advantage in draw controls, 22-7, while outshooting Vassar 37-20.

Oneonta senior Rebecca Monteith (West Islip/West Islip), who is chasing the all-time career goals and points record, had six points in today's game on three goals and three assists.  With her six points, she moved into a tie for second place on the career point list with 225.

Today's game was tightly contested throughout.  The largest lead by either team was three goals, which Oneonta held twice, once at 9-6 and then at 14-11.

Vassar goalie, Katherine Pula, kept the Brewers in the contest with her 16 saves, many of which were from point blank range.

The Red Dragons will look to make it three straight to start the season tomorrow at home when they host Manhattanville for a contest beginning at 1pm.
