Box Score The SUNY Oneonta men's soccer team completely dominated visiting Buffalo State today in SUNYAC action 5-0. The victory secured a bye in the conference tournament, as the Red Dragons earned the No. 2 seed after Plattsburgh defeated Brockport 2-1 in overtime. Despite having the same 7-2 conference record, Plattsburgh earned the top seed because of its win over the Red Dragons earlier in the season.
Oneonta (11-5-1) took control from the opening whistle even though it took them until the 29th minute to put its first goal on the scoreboard. Junior
Jason Ruivo (Sleepy Hollow/Sleepy Hollow) scored his first goal of the season unassisted after he dribbled around a defender before sliding a shot underneath the Bengals keeper.
Six minutes later, freshman
Colin Volpe (Commack/St. Anthony's) notched his fourth goal of the season off an assist from junior
Luke Halberg (Norwich/Valley Heights Christian Academy). Halberg made a crossing pass to Volpe, who was at the top of the box. Volpe settled the ball and then fired a shot to the upper right hand corner of the goal for a 2-0 lead for Oneonta.
The Red Dragons would add a third goal in the final minute of the first half when sophomore
Mitchell Cain (Marcy/Whitesboro) scored on a corner kick. Cain was in the right spot to collect a rebound of a save by the keeper on the original ball sent in from the corner by classmate
Justin Rivera (Bay Shore/Bay Shore).
Freshmen
Ryan Young (Stormville/John Jay) and
Jake Sutherland (Syracuse/West Genesee) each scored their first collegiate goals in the second half for the final margin of victory. Seniors
Alex Shkreli (Bedford/Fox Lane) and
Ian Tenzer (Mahopac/Mahopac) assisted on Young's goal while Tenzer put a ball through to Sutherland who slipped a low shot past the Buffalo keeper.
Oneonta's opponent for its opening game in the SUNYAC tournament will not be known until after next Saturday's first round games. When they find out who their opponent will be, they are scheduled for kickoff at 11am on Wednesday, Oct. 31. The Red Dragons are the defending conference champion and advanced to the final four of the NCAA Division III tournament a year ago.
