OSWEGO - An own goal early in the second half was the difference in a 1-0 win for the Oneonta men's soccer team on Oswego State's Laker Soccer Field on Friday in the SUNYAC opener for both teams.

Laker keeper P.J. Goodwin (Jr., Baldwinsville, N.Y.) made a diving save to his left of an Alex Shkreli (Bedford/Fox Lane) (Bedford/Fox Lane), but his teammates made a mistake while trying to clear the ball and sent the ball into the corner of the net for the only goal of the game.

The first half was evenly played with each team taking six shots as the No. 8 (Oswego State) and No. 10 (Oneonta State) ranked teams in the NSCAA Division III East regional rankings did battle.

The Red Dragons (4-2-1) were coming off a 1-1 tie to previously No. 1 ranked team in the NSCAA Div. III national poll (Christopher Newport) and used that momentum to gain control in the second half.

Oneonta applied more pressure and outshot the Lakers, 7-3, in the second half after getting the goal less than three minutes into the period.

The Lakers' (5-2-0) best chance to tie came when Ryan Tibbets (So., Liverpool N.Y.) had a line drive stopped by a two-handed leaping save, while Andrew Bordash (Fr., Highland Mills, N.Y.) added the other shot on goal for the Lakers three minutes later.

Oneonta vs. Cortland, T 1-1 OT2

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Oneonta senior Gary Laronde (Wheatley Heights/Half Hollow Hills) (Wheatley Heights/Half Hollow Hills) scored the game-tying goal in the 62nd minute as the Red Dragons played to a 1-1 double-overtime tie at Cortland Saturday afternoon in a SUNYAC matchup. The host Red Dragons saw their sixth overtime action of the season, leaving their record at 1-3-5 overall and 0-0-2 in the conference, while the visiting Red Dragons' record stands at 4-2-2 and 1-0-1.

Junior Max Schmitt (Hamburg, Germany/Gymnasium Reinbek) scored his third goal of the season for Cortland with junior Anthony Marinello (Lake Grove/Sachem North) recording an assist. Freshman goalie Brian McNicholas (Stony Point/North Rockland) turned aside six shots.

Senior Jonathan Kowalski (Glens Falls/Glens Falls) (Glens Falls/Glens Falls) assisted on Laronde's goal, and junior goalie Maxwell Siegelman (Roslyn/Roslyn) (Roslyn/Roslyn) made three saves for Oneonta.

Schmitt scored his goal in the 34th minute. After an Oneonta defender blocked Marinello's initial shot, Schmitt one-timed the rebound inside the right post from 16 yards out. Oneonta had two excellent chances to tie the game late in the first half, but senior defender Lukas Wear (South Salem/John Jay-Cross River) cleared Oneonta junior Eric Fortier (Pleasant Valley/Arlington)'s (Pleasant Valley/Arlington) shot off the goal line with six minutes, four seconds remaining and McNicholas followed with a diving save at the right post of a header by Oneonta freshman Mitchell Cain (Marcy/Whitesboro) (Marcy/Whitesboro) 12 seconds later.

The visiting Red Dragons drew even when Kowalski fed a pass to Laronde down the left side. Laronde dribbled past a Cortland defender and beat McNicholas one-on-one with a shot inside the right post. Oneonta had the two best chances to end the game in regulation. McNicholas made a sliding save at the right post on Kowalski in the 69th minute, then denied Shkreli's one-time bid from six yards in the 86th minute.

Neither team generated a quality chance in the first overtime, with each team putting a long shot on goal. In the closing seconds of the second overtime, Oneonta nearly earned the win, but Shkreli's shot on a loose ball after a corner kick slid just wide of the right post with 15 seconds remaining.

Cortland won the penalty-kick tiebreaker, 4-3, and will clinch a higher seed in the SUNYAC playoffs should the two teams tie in the conference standings.

Oneonta will be in action again this coming Friday afternoon when they host Brockport for a SYNYAC match beginning at 4pm.
