ONEONTA, N.Y.—Junior
Rebecca Monteith (West Islip/West Islip) scored five goals today, but the SUNY Oneonta women's lacrosse team came up on the short end of a 13-11 score to visiting Fredonia. The loss for the Red Dragons drops them to 1-9 overall and 1-2 in the SUNYAC while Fredonia moves to 9-2 overall and 2-1 in conference play.
Monteith scored the game's first goal just 1:20 into the contest, but Fredonia countered with three straight goals to take a 3-1 lead. All three goals for the Blue Devils were scored by freshman Taylor Wingerden.
A goal by sophomore
Caroline Tulley (Malverne/Sacred Heart Academy) capped a run of five unanswered goals to give Oneonta a 6-3 lead midway through the first half. Tulley scored a pair of goals today while adding a pair of assists.
Fredonia closed the final 15 minutes with three goals while holding the Red Dragons scoreless as the two teams went to halftime tied at six apiece.
The two teams exchanged two goals each for the first 11 minutes of the second half, as they remained knotted at 8-8. A goal by senior Laura Culhane gave Fredonia the lead for good as they built a three-goal lead at 12-9 with just over 10 minutes to go in the game.
Freshman
Alexa Anzalone (Rocky Point/Rocky Point) and Tulley scored back-to-back goals to pull Oneonta to within one goal at 12-11, but a goal by junior Amy Simon gave the Blue Devils the insurance goal they needed as they held on for the two-goal victory.
Oneonta will be home gain this coming Tuesday when they host New Paltz beginning at 4:00 p.m.
