Field Hockey opens season with back-to-back wins

Senior Ainsley Stoll tallies two game winners

Oneonta 3, St. Lawrence 2 (OT1)

CANTON, N.Y.—SUNY Oneonta senior Ainsley Stoll (Williamsville/Williamsville North) (Williamsville) tallied two goals today including the game-winner in overtime as the Red Dragons opened its 2010 field hockey season with a 3-2 win against host St. Lawrence University. Stoll scored the game's first goal in the ninth minute and then ended the game in the 76th minute on a breakaway.

Newcomer Stephanie Fiske (Marathon) scored a goal and added an assist in her debut for the Red Dragons, who will play Thomas College tomorrow at 11:00 a.m. at St. Lawrence.

St. Lawrence held sizable advantages in both shots (19-9) and penalty corners (19-9), but Oneonta State goalkeeper Leslie Dauphinais (Harpursville/Harpursville) (Harpursville) turned in nine saves to keep her team in the game. Junior Brittany Clark made three saves in her first start for the Saints.

Stoll scored the opening goal of the game at 8:56, when she pounced on a rebound in front of Clark. Fiske was credited with the assist.

St. Lawrence, which out-shot Oneonta 14-3 in the opening half, finally cashed in late in the frame to tie the score at 1-1 before intermission. Junior Taylor Vogt re-directed a centering pass by senior Caitlin Estes behind Dauphinais to knot the score at 33:36.

The Saints continued to pour on the offensive chances early in the second half, and their pressure paid off at 53:49 when Vogt scored her second goal of the game off of a penalty corner. Junior Emily Riley, who was stopped on a penalty stroke only 3:02 into the second half, pushed a pass to her left to junior newcomer Erika Swits. Swits fed a pass towards the goal for Vogt, and the Rochester, NY native once again re-directed the ball into the cage for a 2-1 lead.

Oneonta State would not go away, however, and needed only 3:06 to tie the game at 2-2. An Oneonta player rifled a shot that Clark was able to slow down, but the ball trickled behind her towards the goal line. Fiske was there to finish the play and bring the score to 2-2.

Despite having the majority of scoring chances down the stretch, it was the Saints that were on their heels late in the game, as both senior Brooke Maloney and Vogt were sent off with yellow cards, giving the Red Dragons a two-player advantage for nearly four full minutes.

Though St. Lawrence was able to kill off each of the penalties and got back to full strength in the 7 vs. 7 overtime, the fatigue in the midfield had clearly set in. This allowed Stoll to use a burst of speed to go around the Saints' defense and move in one-on-one against Clark. The keeper tried to cut off the angle, but Stoll was able to sneak a shot past her left leg pad and into the net, allowing Oneonta State to celebrate the 3-2 victory.

CANTON, NY – The Oneonta State field hockey team improved to 2-0 on the young season on Sunday afternoon, as the Red Dragons held off Thomas College by the score of 1-0 at the 2010 “Fall Field Hockey Fest” hosted by St. Lawrence University.

The Red Dragons got the game-winning goal from Ainsley Stoll (Williamsville/Williamsville North), her third goal of the weekend, while Leslie Dauphinais (Harpursville/Harpursville) earned the shutout with a six-save performance in net. Megan Denby had another solid outing in goal for Thomas (0-3, 0-0), making 11 saves to keep the Terriers within striking distance.

The majority of play throughout the game was in the Terriers' end of the field, though the team did a nice job of keeping the ball away from their cage. Thomas put together a flurry of shots off of a penalty corner, but Dauphinais came up with three clutch saves to keep the Terriers scoreless.

As the first half drew towards a close, Oneonta State earned a corner and would finally capitalize on a scoring try at 29:16. Ashley Johnson (Saratoga Springs/Saratoga Springs) got the play started, as she centered a pass off of the corner outlet pass right on Stoll's stick, and she blasted a one-timer past Denby for the 1-0 lead before halftime.

The Red Dragons continued to pile up the offensive tries in the second half, but Thomas College held its ground and was able to stay within a goal thanks to six saves by Dauphinais. The Terriers' best chance to even the scoring came on their two penalty corners, but Denby made a crucial save on Claire Wyman's bid to protect the shutout and keep the Red Dragons unbeaten.

Oneonta State closed with a 17-3 advantage in penalty corners and outshot Thomas College 18-6.

Oneonta will play its home opener this Wednesday, Sep. 8 against Union College beginning at 4:00 p.m.
