SUNY Oneonta Defeats Fredonia 15-12

Red Dragons snap mini two-game skid

      SUNY Oneonta sophomore Rebecca Monteith (West Islip/West Islip) and junior Rosemarie Fazio (Mohegan Lake/Lakeland) scored four goals each today in leading the Red Dragons to a 15-12 win against Fredonia in SUNYAC women's lacrosse action.  The win for Oneonta (7-3/1-2) snapped a mini two-game skid while earning them its first conference win of the season.   
     Oneonta jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the opening 10 minutes of the contest.  Fazio scored two unassisted goals including the opening goal of the game just 14 seconds into the contest.  Fazio scored her third goal of the first half in the 23rd minute to give Oneonta its largest lead at 7-2.
     Fredonia (5-4/0-1) battled back in the waning minutes of the first half with a pair of goals in the final 1:33 to cut Oneonta's lead to 7-4 at halftime.  Senior Katie Monaghan (Fairport/Fairport) at the 28:27 mark while sophomore Amy Simon (Amherst/Amherst) scored less than one minute later at the 29:21 mark.
     An unassisted goal by sophomore Morgan McNamara (Oswego/Oswego)  got the Blue Devils to within two goals at 7-5 early in the second half.
     The two teams then exchanged goals before the hosts scored three straight to take an 11-6 lead just seven minutes into the second half.  Fazio and Monteith each scored as did freshman Caroline Tulley (Malverne/Sacred Heart Academy).
     Fredonia came right back with three unanswered goals including a pair by Simon to pull within two goals once again at 11-9 midway through the half. Oneonta put the game out of reach with three consecutive goals to push its lead back to five goals at 14-9.
     Sophomore Annelise Muscietta (Lindenhurst/Walter O'Connell Copiague) made eight saves in goal for Oneonta in recording her seventh win of the season.
     Oneonta will be home again tomorrow when they host Buffalo State at 11:30 a.m.
