SUNY Cortland Defeats SUNY Oneonta 18-10

Sophomore Rebecca Monteith leads Oneonta with five goals

     SUNY Oneonta sophomore Rebecca Monteith (West Islip/West Islip) scored five goals today, but the visiting rivals from SUNY Cortland left town with an 18-10 win in women's lacrosse action.  The win for Cortland pushed its overall record to 12-2 while remaining undefeated in conference play at 7-0.  The loss for Oneonta puts them at 8-5 overall and 2-4 in the SUNYAC.
      Oneonta got on the scoreboard just 19 seconds into today's contest when freshman Molly McGroary (New City/Clarkstown South) scored with an assist from junior Rosemarie Fazio (Mohegan Lake/Lakeland).
     Freshman Caroline Tulley (Malverne/Sacred Heart Academy) would score an unassisted goal in the fifth minute to give the host Red Dragons an early 2-0 lead.
     Cortland would come right back with a pair of goals to tie the score.  Senior Jess Fritz (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) scored the first with an assist from sophomore Kelly Radigan (Fayetteville/Fayetteville-Manlius) before Radigan scored an unassisted goal that tied the score at two goals apiece.
     The two teams would trade goals before Cortland took control of the first half with five unanswered goals to go ahead 8-3.  Fritz would lead the charge with three goals.
      Back-to-Back goals by Monteith cut into Cortland's lead before a late goal by the visitors gave them a 9-5 lead at halftime.
     The teams exchanged goals to start the second half before Cortland broke the game open with another five-goal run to take a commanding 16-7 lead with just over 16 minutes remaining in the contest.  Sophomore Lindsay Abbott (S. Onondaga/Onondaga Central) scored two of her team high five goals during the stretch.    
     Oneonta goalie Annelise Muscietta (Lindenhurst/Walter O'Connell Copiague)had a season high 14 saves for Oneonta while Cortland goalie, Ally Levy (Reistertown, MD/Seton Keough) made four saves.
     Oneonta will not play again until next Friday, Apr. 30, when they host Oswego for its final home contest of the season beginning at 4:00 p.m.
