CASTLETON N.Y. -- The Oneonta field hockey team secured another high scoring non-conference win against Castleton with an 8-2 victory on the road, Wednesday afternoon. Senior
Alexandra Howell (Holtsville, N.Y./Sachem East) had a dominant performance and led the team with four goals. Freshman
Lila Zaug (Lagrangeville, NY/Arlington) also recorded her first collegiate goal off a penalty stroke. The Red Dragons scored four goals in the first quarter, one in the second, two in the third, and finished off with one goal in the last quarter, to improve to 4-4 on the season, while Castleton dropped to 3-6.
"Part of our pre-game conversation was to have a 'hot start', we wanted to come out strong," said Head Coach
Kelly Kingsbury. "We scored four goals in the first quarter and that felt good! We had some great passing sequences today and it felt good to play well and get the win."
The Red Dragons took opportunity early in the game with senior
Sarah Stadelmann (East Syracuse, N.Y./East Syracuse Minoa) scoring at 1:04. Four minutes later, senior
Marissa Stephan (Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) doubled the lead at 4:58, with an unassisted goal for her first score of the season. Oneonta didn't lose that momentum with Zaug earning a penalty stroke at 9:56 and advancing the team to a 3-0 lead. Ending the first quarter, senior
Jessica Owens (Poughquag, N.Y./Arlington) scored off an assist from junior
Miranda Colacchio (Lagrange, N.Y./Arlington).
Gwyn Vincent put Castleton on the board with an assist from Emilie Higgins in the first two minutes of the second period. The Red Dragons answered back with Howell scoring four consecutive goals, with assists from senior Abigal Draper and freshman
Gaby Ackley (Windsor, NY/Windsor Central), to put Oneonta up 8-1 with seven minutes to play. Howell's four-goal performance gave her a total of 15 goals on the season.
The Spartans recorded the final goal of the game when Brooke Noble scored at 55:34.Â
Freshman
Eva Klessel (Bronxville, NY/Bronxville) played 53:48 and made three saves while allowing one goal for a total of thirty-eight saves on the season. Freshmen
Lilia Lepre (Patchogue, NY/Patchouge Medford) played 6:12 and made two saves while allowing one goal.
The Red Dragons outshot Castleton 13-12 and earned a total of eleven penalty corners.
Oneonta will face Morrisville for their first SUNYAC matchup on Saturday, October 3, at 1 pm.
