SUNY Oneonta Athletics

WILKES-BARRE, PA. – The Oneonta field hockey team picked up a dominant 5-1 non-conference victory over King's College Saturday afternoon at McCarthy Stadium. Senior Alexandra Howell (Holtsville, N.Y./Sachem East) led the team with four goals and an assist for nine points. Junior Miranda Colacchio (Lagrange, N.Y./Arlington) recorded the other goal for Oneonta, which was the game-winner and her first goal with the program. The Red Dragons scored twice in the second and third periods, and one more in the fourth to improve to 3-4 on the season, while the Monarchs dropped to 1-7. 

"We had a slow start today, but then put together some really great passing for nice goals," Head Coach Kelly Kingsbury commented. 

After a scoreless first period, Oneonta opened the scoring at 26:37 when Howell finished a chance off an assist from freshman Gaby Ackley (Windsor, NY/Windsor Central). Just under three minutes later, sophomore Miranda Colacchio (Lagrange, N.Y./Arlington) doubled the lead at 29:23, scoring off an assist from Howell to give the Red Dragons a 2-0 advantage heading into halftime. 

King's cut into the deficit at 39:46 when Gwen Erb scored off an assist from Amelia Mason. Oneonta quickly answered, as Howell scored just 15 seconds later at 40:01 off a pass from sophomore Isabella Cunha (Carle Place, NY/Carle Place). Howell completed her hat trick at 42:55, scoring her third goal of the afternoon to put the Red Dragons ahead 4-1 heading into the fourth period. 

Howell added her fourth goal of the game at 54:04, with junior Marissa Stephan (Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) providing the assist, to cap the scoring at 5-1. The four-goal performance gave Howell 11 goals on the season. 

Howell led the Red Dragons offensively with 10 shots, including nine on goal, while Colacchio finished with two shots and scored her first goal of the season. Ackley recorded an assist and a shot on goal, while Cunha and Stephan each added an assist. 

Freshman Eva Klessel (Bronxville, NY/Bronxville) played all 60 minutes in goal for Oneonta and made three saves while allowing one goal. The Red Dragons outshot King's 23-5 and held a 19-5 advantage in shots on goal. Oneonta also earned nine penalty corners, including five in the third period. 

The Red Dragons will travel to Vermont to face Castleton on Wednesday, September 30th, for another out of conference matchup at 4 pm.    Read Full Article
