ONEONTA, N.Y. -- The Oneonta field hockey team came up short in a close 1-0 battle against Misericordia University, Wednesday evening at All College Field. Misericordia scored the lone goal and gained the slight edge in the early moments of the second quarter. Oneonta made some changes in the second half and totaled 10 penalty corners during the final 30 minutes, but they could not find the game-tying goal. The result moved the Red Dragons to 2-4 this season, and the Cougars to 4-3 overall.
"We had our opportunities tonight," Head Coach
Kelly Kingsbury commented. "We played well enough to win the game but couldn't quite find the equalizer."
Freshman goalie
Eva Klessel (Bronxville, NY/Bronxville) started the game strong for Oneonta with four saves in the first period to keep the game scoreless.
In the second quarter, Misericordia broke the tie when Madison Lasinski scored an unassisted goal at 17:35. Freshman
Gaby Ackley (Windsor, NY/Windsor Central) recorded the first shot on goal for the Red Dragons on a redirect, but it was stopped by the Cougars goalie. Klessel made one more stop in the final seconds to keep it a one-goal game heading into halftime.Â
"I'm proud of the adjustments I asked the team to make," Coach Kingsbury continued. "We made some drastic adjustments in the second half, and they executed the plan really well. That's a big positive takeaway in my book."
Oneonta held possession of the ball in the offensive zone throughout most of the second half. In the third quarter alone, the Red Dragons totaled eight penalty corners and had seniors
Abigail Draper (Remsen, NY/Holland Patent),
Alexandra Howell (Holtsville, N.Y./Sachem East), and junior
Nora Trimarchi (South Glens Falls, N.Y./South Glens Falls) fire a shot on goal, however Jordan Nonnemacher saved each shot for the Cougars.
Before the third quarter ended, Oneonta had their eighth penalty corner at 43:04. Senior
Sarah Stadelmann (East Syracuse, N.Y./East Syracuse Minoa), the Red Dragons injector, pushed the ball out and it made its way to Howell. The Oneonta captain took a shot that went past Nonnemacher, but it went wide of the post and out of play.
Howell had the final shot for the Red Dragons at 53:17 when Ackley brought the ball into the shooting circle and passed it to her for a shot that went just wide of the cage. Oneonta had a couple of penalty corners in the final period, including one in the final minute of play, however Misericordia closed the lanes on both opportunities and did not allow a shot attempt.
Klessel ended the game with five saves for Oneonta. Ackley, Draper, Howell and Trimarchi all recorded a shot on goal.
Nonnemacher totaled four saves for the Cougars. Lasinski totaled five shots with three on goal.
Misericordia finished with a slight 13-10 advantage in total shots, 6-4 with shots on goal, and the Red Dragons had an 11-9 edge in penalty corners.
Oneonta is on the road for their next match on Saturday, September 26, when they travel to Wilkes-Barre, Pa for a match against King's College.
