ONEONTA, N.Y. - The Oneonta women's lacrosse team fell 11-7 to New Paltz in SUNYAC action on Wednesday afternoon. Five Red Dragons found the back of the net as Oneonta falls to 6-5 overall and 3-3 in the SUNYAC. The Hawks move to 8-4 and 4-1 in the conference.
Junior Margot Haring (Doylestown, PA/Central Bucks) stopped a shot from Mia Baldinger at 10:24 to keep the game scoreless, and the Red Dragons responded with an on-goal attempt from freshman Ava Fitzsimons (Pearl River, NY/Pearl River) at 7:35 that Hawks' goalie Piper Mascaros stopped. New Paltz scored first at 5:27 with Lexi Atwater hitting the back of the net off a pass from Allison Beattie. Oneonta responded two minutes later when senior Lindsey Townes (Yorktown Heights, NY/Yorktown) scored to make it 1-1. Haring stopped a pair of shots from Atwater and Beattie to keep the game tied heading into the second quarter.
Oneonta opened the second quarter with two goals within two minutes from Fitzsimons to go ahead 3-1. New Paltz cut the lead to one at 6:13 following a goal from Mia Baldinger and tied at 4:41 when Beattie scored on a woman-up goal. The Hawks added two more before halftime from Samantha Gemmo and Atwater to lead 5-3 at the break.
New Paltz tacked on two early goals from Atwater and Beattie to go ahead 7-3 five minutes into the third quarter. Beattied netted another goal at 7:27 before sophomore Angelina Weinert (Levittown, NY/Division Avenue) scored on a pass from Fitzsimons at 6:43.
The Hawks went on a 3-0 run to start the fourth quarter, with two goals coming from Baldinger. Sophomore Marissa Vallese (Ocean City, NJ/Ocean City) scored at 4:23, and free-position goals from Fitzsimons and senior Chelsea Dodenhoff (Islip Terrace, NY/East Islip) closed out the game.
Fitzsimons led Oneonta with three goals, an assist, and four draw controls. Seniors Megan Hannon (Valley Cottage, N.Y./Nyack) and McKenzie Busch (Babylon, NY/Babylon Jr./Sr.) each had three groundballs.
Atwater had four goals, while Baldinger and Beattie each had three. Amy Whitman recorded eight ground balls and caused six turnovers.
Haring finished with 15 saves. Mascaros had five saves.
Oneonta next travels to face Canton on Saturday, April 11 at noon.
