CANTON, N.Y. - After trailing 8-6 at halftime, the Oneonta women's lacrosse team used an 11-4 second half to defeat Canton 17-12 in SUNYAC play on Saturday afternoon. The Red Dragons move to 7-5 overall and 4-3 in the SUNYAC, while the Roos fall to 3-8 and 1-6 in the conference.
Sophomore Angelina Weinert (Levittown, NY/Division Avenue) netted the opening goal at 14:18 on a free-position shot. Canton responded with goals by Ava Bodnar and Hailey LaShomb to go ahead 2-1. Freshman Emma Refvik (Holtsville, NY/Sachem East) found the back of the net off a pass from freshman Ava Fitzsimons (Pearl River, NY/Pearl River) to tie. Both sides traded leads until 1:40 when Canton's Sydney Dunn scored to make it 5-4.
Weinert scored again to start the second quarter, but another La Shomb score at 12:23 gave the Roos a 6-5 lead. Canton followed with two more goals to take its largest lead at 8-5. Freshman Emily McIntee (East Islip, NY/East Islip) snuck in a goal at 2:18 to make it a two-score game at halftime.
Oneonta shut out Canton in the third quarter, outscoring the Roos 2-0. Weinert scored at 12:18. Junior Margot Haring (Doylestown, PA/Central Bucks) made three saves in the quarter, with Oneonta scoring from Fitzsimons at 3:14 to tie 8-8.
The Red Dragons rattled off three straight goals to start the fourth and went up 11-8. Canton scored two straight to cut the lead to one goal, but senior Lindesy Townes scored at 9:06 to break the streak. Goals from Townes, McIntee, Weiner, and sophomore Marissa Vallese (Ocean City, NJ/Ocean City) comprised a 6-0 Red Dragons' run. Canton answered with two goals, but the Oneonta defense limited the Roos' offense.
Weinert led Oneonta with five goals and added three ground balls and two caused turnovers. McIntee scored four goals and recorded five draw controls. Townes scored twice with three groundballs. Fitzsimons had one goal and an assist with a team-high six draw controls and four ground balls.
Dunn and LaShomb each had four goals, while LaShomb grabbed five draw controls.
Oneonta next hosts Buffalo State on Wednesday, April 15, at 4 p.m.
