CORTLAND, N.Y. - Cortland jumped to a 10-2 halftime lead and shut out the Oneonta women's lacrosse team in the second half to secure a 14-2 SUNYAC victory. Oneonta falls to 6-3 overall and 3-1 in the SUNYAC, while Cortland moves to 7-3 and 3-0 in the conference.
Cortland scored five goals in the first quarter, with two coming from Ashley Melillo. Oneonta scored on a free position from freshman Ava Fitzsimons (Pearl River, NY/Pearl River) to start the second quarter to cut the lead to 5-1. After some back-and-forth in the midfield, Cortland struck again at 11:33 from a woman-down goal by Brooke Elizalde. She scored again at 8:51 to push the lead to 7-1, and Bella Dembinski found the back of the net at 5:38. Fitzsimons scored again at 4:20 to cut the Cortland lead to six, but goals from Emma Dempsey and Elizalde made it 10-2 at the break. The Oneonta offense could not find momentum in the second half, being shut out in the third and fourth.
Fitzsimons led Oneonta with two goals. Freshman Emily McIntee (East Islip, NY/East Islip) added five ground balls and two caused turnovers. Sophomore Angelina Weinert (Levittown, NY/Division Avenue) had four ground balls, four caused turnovers, and one draw control. Freshman Isabella O'Leary (Ballston Spa, NY/Ballston Spa) had four draw controls.
Elizalde recorded four goals, while Melillo had three goals, five assists, three ground balls, and three caused turnovers. Dempsey had three goals and three assists.
Oneonta's next game is at Oswego on Friday, April 3, at 5 p.m.
