FREDONIA, N.Y. - Three Red Dragons recorded hat tricks as the Oneonta women's lacrosse team opened SUNYAC play with an 11-4 win over Fredonia on Monday afternoon. The Red Dragons move to 3-1 overall and 1-0 in the SUNYAC, while the Blue Devils fall to 4-1 and 0-1 in the conference.
After Fredonia goalkeeper Jessica Kowalski saved a shot from freshman Emily McIntee (East Islip, NY/East Islip), the Blue Devils cleared the midfield. Camryn Jacobs passed to Mieley Baran for the opening goal to give Fredonia a 1-0 lead. Oneonta responded at 10:35 with senior Grace Beattie (Windsor, NY/Windsor) scoring to tie 1-1. Senior Lindsey Townes (Yorktown Heights, NY/Yorktown) found the back of the net at 8:44, and senior Chelsea Dodenhoff (Islip Terrace, NY/East Islip) scored off a pass from sophomore Angelina Weinert (Levittown, NY/Division Avenue) to take a 3-1 lead. The Red Dragons scored once more in the first quarter from a goal from freshman Ava Fitzsimons (Pearl River, NY/Pearl River) at 5:32. Fredonia scored with 2:04 left to keep the score within two.
Oneonta held Fredonia scoreless in the second quarter and added two more goals. McIntee scored in the 13th minute, and Beattie made it 6-2 with a goal in the final seconds.
Junior goalie Margot Haring (Doylestown, PA/Central Bucks) stopped a shot from Katie O'Brien to keep the four-goal lead. Free position goals from Fitzsimons and Dodenhoff gave Oneonta an 8-2 advantage. The Blue Devils scored at 2:26 to make it 8-3 heading into the fourth.
Oneonta rattled off three goals in the first five minutes of the fourth quarter. Fitzsimons scored her third at 13:54, and then Beattie recorded her hat trick at 11:26. Dodenhoff scored on a free position to make it 11-3. A final goal from Fredonia's O'Brien ended the game 11-4.
Beattie had a career-high three goals with one assist. Fitzsimons had three goals, two ground balls, two caused turnovers, and five draw controls. Dodenhoff scored three goals. Townes had one goal, while McIntee had one goal, two caused turnovers, and two ground balls.
O'Brien had three goals, and Baran had one goal. Noelle Mendez had three draw controls.
Haring finished with six saves in goal. Kowalski made ten saves.
Oneonta next plays at Brockport on Saturday, March 14 at noon.
