ONEONTA, N.Y. - The Oneonta women's lacrosse team had four multi-goal scorers on the way to a 9-5 win over Hartwick in the Battle of the Hills on Wednesday afternoon. The Red Dragons move to 2-1 overall, while the Hawks fall to 1-2.
Oneonta struck first in the opening quarter with sophomore Angelina Weinert (Levittown, NY/Division Avenue) scoring off an assist from senior Lindsey Townes (Yorktown Heights, NY/Yorktown) to take a 1-0 lead at 12:18. Weinert won the following draw control, and a shot from Townes sailed wide. The Red Dragons drew a free position attempt at 11:37. Freshman Emily McIntee (East Islip, NY/East Islip) fired the shot, but Hartwick goalie Brooke Lynett made the save.
The Hawks scored at 5:15 following a Oneonta green card. Lily Dempsey scored on a pass from Jacie Owent to make it 1-1.
The Red Dragons shut out the Hawks 5-0 in the second quarter. Senior Chelsea Dodenhoff (Islip Terrace, NY/East Islip) fed the ball to McIntee, who found the back of the net at 11:57. Oneonta scored four goals in the final four minutes of the half. Sophomore Ava De Vito (Levittown, NY/Division Avenue) caused a turnover at 5:15 and scooped up the ground ball. Freshman Madison DeAngelis (Hamilton, NY/Hamilton Central) passed to freshman Ava Fitzsimons (Pearl River, NY/Pearl River) from behind the Hartwick net, which led to another Oneonta goal. Weinert scored on a free position shot at 2:09 to make it 4-1. Goals from McIntee and Weinert in the final minute gave the Red Dragons a 6-1 lead heading into halftime.
Hartwick won the opening draw control of the second half and fired two quick shots at the Oneonta goal. Junior goalkeeper Margot Haring (Doylestown, PA/Central Bucks) made saves on both. Both offenses struggled to find momentum until 5:06, when Fitzsimons found the back of the net on a pass from Dodenhoff. Hartwick answered with two quick goals from Abby Skurka and Shea Holloway to cut the lead to 7-3 to end the third.
After Hartwick cleared the ball early in the fourth, senior Gisele Sweeney (Mount Vernon, NY/Saint Vincent Ferrer) caused a turnover that led to an eventual goal from Townes at 13:31. Townes scored again at 10:07 to push the Red Dragons ahead 9-3. The Hawks added two more goals from Holloway to cut the lead to four, but Oneonta held on for the victory.
Weinert recorded a hat trick and won three draw controls. McIntee added two goals, one assist, and one caused turnover. Townes tallied two goals, one assist, and three ground balls. Fitzsimons scored two goals with three ground balls and a team-high five draw controls. Dodenhoff made two assists, and DeAngelis had her first-career assist. Sweeney had three caused turnovers and four ground balls, while senior Megan Hannon (Valley Cottage, N.Y./Nyack) had two caused turnovers.
Holloway finished with three goals, while Shurka and Dempsey each had one. Ashley Ament and Gabby Fitzgerald each had three ground balls. Jammie Decker caused five turnovers.
Haring finished with nine saves in goal and had five groundballs. Lynett finished with 17 saves.
Oneonta next travels to Fredonia on Monday, March 9 at 3 p.m. to open SUNYAC play.
