ONEONTA, N.Y. - The Oneonta women's lacrosse team led by double digits at halftime on the way to an 18-4 win over Morrisville on Wednesday afternoon. The Red Dragons move to 5-2 overall and 2-0 in the SUNYAC, while the Mustangs fall to 3-2 and 0-1 in the conference.
Oneonta shut out Morrisville 8-0 in the first quarter, behind three goals from sophomore Angelina Weinert (Levittown, NY/Division Avenue). Senior Lindsey Townes (Yorktown Heights, NY/Yorktown) scored the opening goal at 13:51 off an assist from freshman Madison DeAngelis (Hamilton, NY/Hamilton Central). Then freshman Ava Fitzsimons (Pearl River, NY/Pearl River) netted an unassisted goal at 12:57. Weinert netted the woman-up score at 11:26. Goals from Weinert and Townes pushed Oneonta ahead 5-0, and Fitzsimons scored again at 2:58 to take a six-goal lead. Freshman Emily McIntee (East Islip, NY/East Islip) found the back of the net at 1:51 from a pass by DeAngelis, and Weinert scored with 16 seconds left to make it 8-0.
The Red Dragons rolled to start the second quarter, scoring four goals within the first five minutes after winning each draw control. Fitzsimons scored on a free position at 13:39, and after she won the ensuing draw control, Townes scored at 12:14. Townes added a goal at 11:30, and Weinert scored on a Grace Beattie (Windsor, NY/Windsor) assist at 9:52 to make it 12-0.
Morrisville got on the board at 7:08 with a goal by Samantha Budney. Junior goalie Margot Haring (Doylestown, PA/Central Bucks) stopped shots by Anyssua Ingersoll and Deli Vega-Haley to hold the Mustangs to 12-1 heading into halftime.
Morrisville scored the opening goals of the second half from Vega-Haley and Budney to cut the lead to 12-3. McIntee added a goal at 3:26 to pull away 13-3.
The Mustangs scored their final goal early in the fourth from Mary Trowbridge at 13:46. Oneonta closed out on a 5-0 run, with scores from Fitzsimons, McIntee, Townes, and Beattie.
Townes led Oneonta with six points on five goals and one assist. Fitzsimons had five goals, five draw controls, and two ground balls. Weinert netted four goals, while McIntee had three goals, one assist, two draw controls, and two ground balls.
Budney had two goals and an assist. Ingersoll had eight draw controls and three ground balls.
Haring finished with 11 saves in goal, while freshman Ava Berkowitz (Pleasantville, NY/Pleasantville) made five. Aniyah Smith had nine saves for Morrisville.
