POTSDAM, N.Y. - The Oneonta women's lacrosse team had six multi-goal scorers in a 21-12 win over Potsdam on Saturday afternoon. The Red Dragons move to 6-2 overall and remain undefeated in the SUNYAC at 3-0. The Bears fall to 2-6 and 0-2 in the conference.
After a Potsdam turnover in the opening minutes, senior McKenzie Busch (Babylon, NY/Babylon Jr./Sr.) scooped up the ground ball to give the Red Dragons possession. Oneonta cleared the ball, and freshman Ava Fitzsimons (Pearl River, NY/Pearl River) scored at 13:15 to take the early 1-0 lead. The Bears tied 1-1 following a goal from Ava Murphy at 12:01, but two straight goals from Fitzsimons at 8:57 and 8:18 made it 3-1. Potsdam responded with a pair of goals by Jayla Thompson and Abby Kraus to tie at 3-3.
A Potsdam green card on Rachel Madore gave Oneonta a woman-up goal from senior Lindsey Townes (Yorktown Heights, NY/Yorktown) at 5:48 to retake the lead, and the Red Dragons closed out the first quarter with scores from Townes and sophomore Angelina Weinert (Levittown, NY/Division Avenue) to go ahead 6-3.
Townes scored 16 seconds into the second quarter, and added two more before the 10-minute mark to give Oneonta a 9-4 lead. Potsdam goals by Murphy and Thompson cut the lead to three before senior Chelsea Dodenhoff (Islip Terrace, NY/East Islip) netted a goal at 4:34 to make it 10-6. The Bears closed out the half with two unanswered goals to make it 10-8.
Neither side scored in the first ten minutes of the third quarter. Oneonta proceeded to shut out Potsdam 4-0 with two goals by Fitzsimons and a pair from freshman Emily McIntee (East Islip, NY/East Islip) and senior Grace Beattie (Windsor, NY/Windsor) to push ahead 14-8.
Oneonta jumped ahead 17-8 in the fourth behind three straight goals to open the quarter. Potsdam responded with a 2-0 run, but McIntee scored off a pass from freshman Madison DeAngelis (Hamilton, NY/Hamilton Central) to go up 18-10. Potsdam cut the lead to 19-12, but final goals from Dodenhoff and Beattie sealed the victory.
Fitzsimons led Oneonta with seven goals and added one assist, four ground balls, and nine draw controls. Townes scored five goals, while McIntee had three goals and four caused turnovers. Beattied recorded three goals with one assist, while Dodenhoff had two goals. DeAngelis finished with four assists. Busch added four caused turnovers and three ground balls.
Thompson led Potsdam with four goals and one assist. Murphy added three goals, while Megan MacWilliams had two goals and two assists. Abby Kraus caused four turnovers.
Junior Margot Haring (Doylestown, PA/Central Bucks) had three saves in goal, and freshman Ava Berkowitz (Pleasantville, NY/Pleasantville) made five. Potsdam's Olivia Minarich had 15 saves.
Oneonta next travels to face Cortland on Tuesday, March 31, at 4 p.m.
