BOSTON, MA - After Emerson scored the opening goal, the Oneonta women's lacrosse team scored 21 straight goals to secure a 21-1 win over the Lions on Wednesday evening. The Red Dragons move to 4-2, while the Lions fall to 4-4.
Ava DelliCompagni won the opening draw control for Emerson and struck the crossbar on the first shot. The Lions maintained possession, and DelliCompagni passed to Laina Gustafson, who found the back of the net at 14:25. Freshman Emily McIntee (East Islip, NY/East Islip) caused a turnover on Bella Vaccari, and Madison DeAngelis (Hamilton, NY/Hamilton Central) scooped up the ground ball. Sophomore Angelina Weinert (Levittown, NY/Division Avenue) scored at 13:04 to tie 1-1. Oneonta rattled off five more goals, with senior Chelsea Dodenhoff (Islip Terrace, NY/East Islip) scoring on a free position at 10:34. McIntee added a free position goal at 7:39, and Townes scored her first goal of the night at 7:12 to make it 4-1. Townes added two more before the end of the first quarter to make it 6-1.
Oneota scored three goals in the opening four minutes of the second quarter. Weinert tallied a goal off a pass from Townes at 12:45, and a pair of goals by freshman Ava Fitzsimons (Pearl River, NY/Pearl River) pushed the Red Dragons ahead 9-1. Sophomore Sarah Magliaro (Holbrook, NY/Sachem) caused a turnover, and Oneonta retook possession at 11:29. McInee scored at 10:12, and freshman Emma Refvik (Holtsville, NY/Sachem East) netted her first-career goal at 9:35 to take an 11-1 lead. Townes and Fitzsimons both scored before halftime to make it 13-1.
Oneonta shut out the Lions in the second half. Townes had three more goals in the third quarter. In the fourth quarter, sophomore Amelia Harmon (Southold, NY/Southold Jr. Sr.) scored her first-career goal at 13:23 to make it 19-1. McIntee and sophomore Marissa Vallese (Ocean City, NJ/Ocean City) both tacked on goals to close out the game.
Townes led the team with eight points (7 goals, 1 assist). Fitzsimons added four goals, an assist, and six draw controls. McIntee recorded a hat trick with five ground balls and three caused turnovers. Weinert had two goals, one assist, and four draw controls.
Junior Margot Haring (Doylestown, PA/Central Bucks) made two saves in goal. Freshman Ava Berkowitz (Pleasantville, NY/Pleasantville) had six saves in the second half.
Oneonta next hosts Morrisville in SUNYAC action on Wednesday, March 25, at 4 p.m.
