MADISON, NJ. -- The Oneonta women's tennis team fell in their road match against Drew University, 7-0, Tuesday afternoon. Junior
Haley Peck (West Point, N.Y./James I. O'Neil) and freshman
Trinity Lyons (Mastic, N.Y./William Floyd) both forced a third set tiebreaker in their respective singles matches, but the Ranger opponents came away with both matches while taking the other courts in straight sets. The result moved the Red Dragons to 6-11 overall, while the Rangers improved to 2-5 this season.
Drew started off the match by sweeping all three doubles courts for the doubles point. Peck and sophomore
Taylor Plue (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Saratoga Springs) were defeated by Natalia Zamora and Madison Williams on court one, 6-3. Freshman duo
Kiersten Rufrano (Oneonta, NY) and
Dakota Jimenez (Poughquag, NY/Arlington) were beaten by Riley Roesel and Nicole Kalorin on court two, 6-1, and first year pairing
Ashley Glaviano (Glen Cove, NY/Glen Cove) and Lyons fell on court three to Danielle Pettoni and Kapriana Payami, 6-1.
In singles play, Peck and Lyons went into third sets on courts one and six, respectively. Peck faced Roesel on the top court, and after dropping the first set, 6-3, the Red Dragon bounced back with a 6-4 second set. In the tiebreaker, Roesel snuck past Peck to take the match, 6-3, 4-6, 10-7.
Lyons took on Payami on court six, and following a back-and-forth first set where the Ranger came out on top, Lyons handled her opponent for a 6-3 second set. In the third set, Payami had the advantage for the match, 7-5, 3-6, 10-6.
The other four singles courts were determined in straight sets and were in favor of Drew. Plue was bested in a pair of 6-3 sets against Zamora on court two. Rufrano and Jimenez were both tripped up, 6-3, 6-1, on courts three and four, respectively. Glaviano stumbled against Pettoni on court five, 6-1, 6-0.
The Red Dragons are back in action for spring break play in Hilton Head, South Carolina. Oneonta will play on Wednesday, March 18, against Macalester at 10 am, then Salve Regina at 4:30 pm.
