UTICA, N.Y. -- After Mother Nature changed the location of today's match, the Oneonta women's tennis team upended and bageled Utica in a non-conference match, 7-0, Wednesday afternoon. The Red Dragons did not give up a game in doubles play, while five of the six singles players recorded a bagel set victory, and sophomore
Jaila Killingbeck (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) picked up her first collegiate singles win. The team improved to 3-2 this season and the Pioneers dropped to 0-7 overall.
Oneonta came out of the gates strong and recorded three, 6-0, bagel wins in the doubles matches. Junior
Haley Peck (West Point, N.Y./James I. O'Neil) and sophomore
Annika Cripe (Islip, N.Y./Islip) defeated Lyndsey Tiedemann and Natalyn Williams on the No. 1 court, sophomore
Taylor Plue (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Saratoga Springs) and freshman
Dakota Jimenez (Poughquag, NY/Arlington) beat Kimora Simmons and Victoria Elefante on the No. 2 court, and the freshmen pair of
Ashley Glaviano (Glen Cove, NY/Glen Cove) and
Kiersten Rufrano (Oneonta, NY) bested Saige Burton and Camryn Donley on the No. 3 court.
The Plue and Jimenez duo, as well as the Glaviano and Rufrano pairing, each improved to 2-0 in doubles play this season. Together, Cripe and Peck have won the last three doubles matches and are 3-2 as the Red Dragons' top team.
The dominant play continued for Oneonta in the singles play with six wins that included five bagel sets across the courts. Killingbeck grabbed her first singles victory as a Red Dragon on court No. 6 in straight sets over Hannah Slater, 6-1, 6-0.
Like Killingbeck, Peck and Plue each recorded 6-1, 6-0, sets to cruise past Tiedemann and Williams on the No. 1 and No. 2 singles courts, respectively. On court No. 3, Rufrano weathered Simmons' attack in the first set before she handled Simmons in the second set for a 6-4, 6-1 win.
Jimenez upended Elefante in the first set with a bagel on court No. 4, then she overpowered her in the second set for a 6-0, 6-2 victory. Freshman
Trinity Lyons (Mastic, N.Y./William Floyd) bageled Hannah Loebakka in the first set on court No. 5, then Loebakka retired in the second set to give Lyons the win.
The Red Dragons' next match is in New Paltz on Friday, September 26, for a SUNYAC showdown against the Hawks at 3 pm.
