CORTLAND, N.Y. - On Saturday, the Oneonta men's track & field team finished third out of 11 scoring teams at the SUNYAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships. The Red Dragons had five individual champions and scored 113 points. Cortland won the meet with 246.5 points.
Sophomore Jackson Sergeant (Pearl River, NY/Clarkstown South) took bronze in the decathlon with 4,269 points. He won the 110-meter hurdles at 16.06 and was third in the discus at 19.80 meters.
Senior Gabe Burns (Riverhead, NY/Riverhead) ran a personal best of 31:12.02 to win the 10,000-meter race. Fifth-year Jonthomas Bierman (Mamaroneck, NY/Mamaroneck) was the 3,000-meter steeplechase champion at 9:27.77, while sophomore Chris Schimkus (Massapequa, NY/Massapequa) earned silver at 9:33.54.
Fifth-year John Balk, Jr. (Suffern, NY/Suffern) placed fifth in the 1,500 at 4:10.17, and Schimkus crossed seventh at 4:14.33. Senior Matt Hayden (Long Valley, NJ) finished ninth at 4:18.56.
Junior Tariq Earl (Centereach, NY/Centereach) won the 110-meter hurdles at 14.73. Junior Calvin Hitzschke (Mexico, NY/Mexico Academy & Central School) placed fourth at 15.73. Freshman Justin Berkowitz (East Meadow, NY/East Meadow) took fourth in the 400-meter hurdles at 58.13.
Bierman took gold in the 5,000-meter race at 15:13.14. Sophomore Noah Pickard (Batavia, NY/Batavia) placed ninth at 16:20.06.
In the field events, senior Marco Altieri (Staten Island, NY/Staten Island) placed sixth in the javelin at 44.17 meters. Junior Drew Obernesser (New City, NY/Clarkstown North) earned eighth at 42.15 meters. Senior Sawyer Eckberg (Maryland, NY/Laurens-Milford) placed fifth in the discus at 44.22 meters.
Freshman Ayobami Adebayo (Long Island, NY/Longwood) won the high jump with a personal record of 2.00 meters. He went on to place second in the triple jump at 14.10 meters.
Oneonta next competes at the AARTFC Championships on May 14.
