PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. - The Oneonta women's lacrosse team outscored Plattsburgh 13-7 in the first half to hold on to an eventual 18-12 victory on Wednesday afternoon. The Red Dragons move to 4-8 overall and 3-2 in the SUNYAC, while the Cardinals fall to 3-8 and 1-4 in conference play.
After Plattsburgh's Cynthia Barnosky scored the opening goal at 13:49, junior Lindsey Townes (Yorktown Heights, NY/Yorktown) netted the following two to take a 2-1 lead. Senior Elizabeth Doherty (Miller Place, NY/Miller Place) took the draw control at 9:57, and senior Cassidy Moore (Hampton Bays, NY/Hampton Bays) scored 30 seconds later from an assist by junior Chelsea Dodenhoff (Islip Terrace, NY/East Islip).
The Cardinals went on a 3-1 run to tie 4-4, but the Red Dragons found two consecutive goals from Doherty to lead 6-4 heading into the second quarter.
Oneonta opened the second quarter scoring five unanswered goals, with three coming from Moore. Plattsburgh broke the streak from an Ashley O'Hara goal at 3:53, but another Moore goal from a free position at 2:57 made it 13-5. The Cardinals closed out with two goals to cut the Oneonta lead to six at halftime.
The Red Dragons rattled off another run in the third quarter, and senior Mason Benvenuto (Lynbrook, NY/Lynbrook) capped off a 4-0 run with a goal at 4:12.
Doherty scored at 14:21 in the fourth before Plattsburgh closed out the game on a 3-0 run.
Moore led Oneonta with nine points (five goals, four assists) and eight draw controls. Downey added six points (four goals, two assists), while Townes had four goals. Doherty finished with three goals and two assists, while Benvenuto had two goals.
Barnosky scored four goals with one assist, and Abby Guasconi scored three.
Senior Julia Hawkins (East Greenbush, NY/Columbia) made two saves in goal, while freshman Margot Haring (Doylestown, PA/Central Bucks) had eight.
Plattsburgh's Mae Olshansky finished with six saves.
Oneonta next host Canton on Sat. Apr. 12 at 3 p.m.
